IslandWood a "school in the woods" is an environmental education and conference center on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle. Changes in the programs and occupancy resulted in wastewater loading that exceeded the capacity the Living Machine System installed in 2002 . Aqua Nova designed an upgrade to that system in 2011 that added a new wetland stage and re-purposed existing treatment components. The three-stage biological treatment system is followed by filtration and disinfection and produces effluent suitable for re-use with minimal polishing treatment.
Aqua Nova services included engineering, permitting, construction oversight and commissioning. The upgraded system was commissioned in early 2012.
Aqua Nova provided additional design and permitting services provided in 2019 for a performance upgrade and also permitting Non-Potable Water Reuse for toilet flushing via a special review process through the Washington State Department of Health. Implementation of this phase is pending.
